Moverse Simplifies Marker-Based Motion Capture with Orbbec’s Femto Depth Sensors

Headquartered in Thessaloniki, Greece, Moverse is a deep technology startup in the 3D animation-related media and entertainment industry. Moverse’s end-to-end 3D animation workflow uses Orbbec Femto Mega devices in sparse (from 4 to 8 cameras) spatiotemporally aligned setups to provide high-quality 3D character animation outcomes in a fast and easy way.

Moverse is accelerating 3D animation and making it more accessible by reducing the resources needed by 50-70% for 3D animators and content creators. The company offers affordable, frictionless Motion Capture with automatic clean-up and intelligent post-processing for diverse use cases.

Industry Trends

Key trends in the industry include the shift towards real-time motion streaming, leveraging artificial intelligence for enhanced outcomes, and improving accessibility for smaller studios.

Motion Capture’s ability to deliver realism and immersion has led to its adoption across diverse industries. In fact, the global 3D animation market is projected to hit $62.11B by 2032.A significant contributor to this growth is the rise of 3D animation from motion capture, fueled by demand in entertainment, gaming, healthcare, education, and beyond.

Challenges

Traditional marker-based optical solutions have remained largely unchanged for decades despite their limitations. These solutions rely on expensive, high-frequency optical cameras. Alternatives like inertial systems are complex, while affordable options have often resulted in noisy data, hindering their application in various fields such as e-health, fitness, and professional recordings. Additionally, there needs to be more tools enabling the community-wide reusability of motion capture data, further inhibiting broader utilization and growth in related industries.

Solutions Delivered

Orbbec’s Femto Mega, developed using Microsoft’s Time of flight (TOF) technology, simplifies marker-based motion capture (MoCap). By utilizing infrared and depth streams from a single device, even in sparse setups of 3-4 calibrated and synchronized cameras, 3D marker positions can be accurately detected and extracted.

Additionally, integration of Orbbec’s software development kit (SDK), enables seamless utilization of multiple Orbbec Femto Mega or Bolt Devices within Moverse’s motion capture workflow. This SDK provides developers with a comprehensive set of tools, resources, and APIs to effectively leverage the functionalities of Orbbec’s depth sensors. It enables real-time, low-latency marker-based motion capture, as successfully demonstrated at SIGGRAPH, with the added benefit of exporting fully clean 3D animations through cloud services.
