With urban environments becoming more sophisticated, the need for innovative technologies that can efficiently monitor and manage public spaces is increasing. Enliteon, a leader in people tracking software, is at the forefront of this transformation. By developing platform-independent solutions that convert the latest 3D cameras into highly accurate people counters and trackers, Enliteon is helping cities, retailers, and healthcare providers gain deeper insights into human movement and behavior.
Enliteon is committed to privacy, ensuring data collection remains strictly movement-based without personal identifiers. Their systems strictly adhere to GDPR and relevant data protection standards, ensuring compliance across regions. The middleware’s platform independence also enables secure integration with a wide range of 3D sensors.
The Challenge:
Enliteon was tasked with a challenging project for a Smart City initiative aimed at monitoring pedestrian activity on a major shopping street. The goal was to accurately count pedestrian entries and exits, map walking routes, and monitor the duration of stops. The data collected needed to be real-time, reliable, and actionable, helping the municipality make informed decisions on managing public spaces, optimizing staffing levels, and assessing the area’s attractiveness for real estate investments.
Given the complexity of the environment and the high volume of pedestrian traffic, Enliteon required a camera solution that could offer precision, adaptability, and durability.
The Solution:
To address these challenges, Enliteon integrated Orbbec’s Gemini 335L and Gemini 336L cameras into their system. Released in 2024 as the flagship products of the Gemini 330 series, these two cameras are based on Active and Passive Stereo Vision technology, providing reliable depth data for indoor and outdoor operations. Key features that made the Gemini 335L and 336L ideal for this project include:
- High Quality Built-in Depth Processing: The custom ASIC MX6800 ensures precise depth measurement, critical for accurate people tracking.
- Wide Field of View (FoV) and Extended Depth Range: With a diagonal FoV exceeding 100° and depth range beyond 20 meters, the cameras offer extensive area coverage without blind spots. Both the RGB and depth FoV are aligned, ensuring seamless capture.
- Versatile Lighting Adaptability: Maintains robust performance in varied lighting conditions, from bright outdoor light to high-contrast environments with reflective surfaces.
- Distortion-Free Imaging: Features an integrated depth and RGB global shutter for image quality, with frame rates up to 60fps, effectively minimizing motion blur.
- Integrated IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit): Provides enhanced stability and accuracy in tracking movements.
- Single Cable USB 3.0 Power and Connectivity: Simplifies installation and reduces clutter by providing both power and data connectivity through a single cable.
- Orbbec SDK Compatibility: Facilitates easy setup and integration with Enliteon’s software.
Built with IP65-rated weatherproof enclosures, these cameras withstand harsh environmental conditions, offering long-term durability. They were strategically placed across the shopping street to capture comprehensive data on pedestrian movement, which was then visualized on a user-friendly dashboard developed by Enliteon. This dashboard allowed the municipality to access real-time insights and historical data trends, aiding in decision-making processes for urban management.
The Results:
The integration of Orbbec’s Gemini 330 series cameras significantly improved the accuracy and efficiency of Enliteon’s people tracking solutions. The cameras provided detailed, real-time data on pedestrian entries, exits, walking routes, and stop durations. This data was crucial for optimizing public space management, adjusting staffing levels in nearby retail stores, and evaluating the area’s attractiveness for potential investors.
Enliteon’s system, powered by the Gemini 330 series cameras, not only met but exceeded the expectations of the Municipality. The data’s accuracy and the system’s robust performance across various environmental conditions highlighted the reliability and versatility of Orbbec’s technology.
This successful collaboration underscores the value of combining Enliteon’s innovative software solutions with Orbbec’s advanced 3D vision technology.
“Orbbec and Enliteon have been partners since 2015, working together to transform generic 3D cameras into advanced people trackers and counters,” said Riccardo Mazzurco, CEO of Enliteon. “The recent product releases, along with Orbbec’s future roadmap, will undoubtedly enhance our ongoing collaboration, enabling us to continue delivering industry-leading solutions across various markets.”
With Orbbec’s Stereo Vision 3D cameras at the core of their systems, Enliteon is well-positioned to lead the way in providing the next generation of people tracking and counting solutions.
