Reference solution & best practice – power delivery

I. Power Capability and Bandwidth Requirements of USB Ports:
Both Gemini 335 and Gemini 335L require the USB ports on the customer’s motherboard to support a data bandwidth of USB 3.0 (5Gbps), and the power supply capability of the USB ports should support 5V/1.5A or higher.

II. Solutions for Insufficient Power Supply Capability of USB Ports:
If the customer’s motherboard USB 3.0 port can only support up to 0.9A, there are two solutions available:

Solution A:

Without hardware modifications, it is necessary to adjust the laser power level. For Gemini 335, the laser power level needs to be adjusted from 6 (default value) to 4, and press the Refresh button to refresh the laser power level, ensuring that the peak current of Gemini 335 does not exceed 0.9A, as shown in Figure 1.

Gemini 335L, adjust the laser power level from 6 (default value) to 5, and press the Refresh button to refresh the laser power level, ensuring that the peak current of Gemini 335L does not exceed 0.9A, as shown in Figure 2.

Note:
Decreased laser energy levels in Gemini 335/335L may reduce the depth quality in certain scenarios. To address this issue, customers need adapt the configuration according to the unique requirements of their particular application.

1. Gemimi 335/335L is capable to work in both active and passive modes, thus reduction of laser energy level has no effect on the depth effect of outdoors performance where the passive mode dominates. But it reduces the depth integrity and depth accuracy for some indoor scenes, such as low-reverse non-textured scenes or long-distance non-textured objects.

2. Energy level reduction affects moving objects in indoor dark light environment. It takes longer exposure time to obtain better depth quality after energy level reduction, resulting in the motion blur.

Solution B:

If reducing intensity of the laser power is undesirable, an additional switching board can be used, powered by an external adapter providing 5V/1.5A. The 5V/1.5A power supply is routed through the DC-IN interface to the USB Power Switch SY6874DBC chip’s power input on the adapter board. The VBUS signal from the motherboard’s USB port only controls the SY6874DBC’s EN enable pin, thereby managing the 5V power delivery to the USB A Female port. The power is then delivered to the Gemini 335 or Gemini 335L through a USB 3.0 cable, fulfilling the power requirements for the Gemini series, as illustrated in Figure 3.
