The Astra 2 is a structured light 3D camera released in 2023 as the successor to Orbbec’s widely used Astra series. It is upgraded with Orbbec’s latest custom ASIC for high-quality depth processing, along with an IMU and multi-camera synchronization. Designed for indoor operation, it is easy to set up with the Orbbec SDK and delivers accurate, reliable depth data for applications such as body scanning, quality control, and rehabilitation.
The Astra 2 outputs high-quality depth data from 0.6 to 8m, with a precision of 0.16% or better at 1m. It delivers depth resolution up to 1600×1200 at 30fps and RGB resolution up to 1920×1080 at 30fps. This high precision makes it well suited to detailed indoor 3D measurement tasks.
The Astra 2 uses a single USB 3.0 Type-C connection for both data and power, with average power consumption under 3W. It includes an IMU, supports hardware triggering, and outputs point cloud, depth map, IR, and RGB data. The camera measures 144.5 x 45.3 x 38.6mm, weighs 241g, and mounts via a 1/4-20UNC thread. Its operating range is 0 to 35 degrees Celsius for indoor use.
Yes. The Astra 2 supports multi-camera synchronization, which allows several units to be coordinated for applications that need broader coverage. Combined with its high precision and built-in IMU, this makes it flexible for larger installations.
The Astra 2 is used for body scanning, where a whole-body scan provides an overview of a person’s health and body composition; for quality control, where high-precision 3D measurement of product dimensions and surfaces improves consistency and reduces waste; and for rehabilitation, where, combined with skeleton tracking software, it helps create personalized exercises and treatments.
No. The Astra 2 is based on structured light technology and is designed for indoor operation, with an operating range of 0 to 35 degrees Celsius and 5% to 95% relative humidity. For indoor and outdoor robotics use cases, Orbbec’s stereo vision cameras such as the Gemini 330 series are a better fit, while the Astra 2 is optimized for high-precision indoor 3D capture.
